If you recall, the men married in August 2023 and shared a video on Instagram dressed to the nines in red and black outfits, throwing confetti in the air and then turning in for a slo-mo smooch.
Split from husband Rodrigo Aburto
On Thursday, Matteo announced the breakup during a Major Life Update episode of his podcast I Never Liked You with co-host Nick Smith.
“I’m so uncomfortable. I don’t know how to say this. Rodrigo and I did break up,” Matteo began his disclosure. “I know a lot of people have been asking about it. Yeah, we did break up, but the good thing about this is that him and I are still friends with each other.”
He said he touched base with Rodrigo to let him know he was going to publicly address the demise of their marriage.
“Obviously, we kind of wanted our privacy to sort of figure out how we feel and when it was the right time, etc.,” he added. “But we are really good friends, which I love. I actually feel quite proud of that.”
He continued: “Look, it sucks to break up with someone and then, you know, you’re not sure how to tell people and I don’t know. I’ve started talking about it on stage. I wrote jokes and, of course, I called him and I was like, ‘Hey, I have a bunch of jokes. I want to read them over with you first. Because I wouldn’t want to talk on stage without you knowing.’ And he was like, ‘You know, of course.’ And we laughed and then I took some time.”
Rodrigo’s rebrand
Matteo did not say when the couple split, give a reason for the breakup or if they officially divorced. However, internet sleuths began to question the status of their relationship after Rodrigo wiped his Instagram clean in May 2025 and announced a “rebrand” two months later.
Without getting specific or naming anyone, the hunky dancer and fitness trainer tried to explain why he deleted all his old posts, which included those with Matteo.
“If my life is changing. My journey is changing. I am changing, then my social media needs to change,” he said cryptically at the time.
In addition to his successful personal training business, Rodrigo has since dabbled in acting appearing on the Netflix hit Beauty in the Black.
The Italian model
Rodrigo has not publicly commented on the split, but did give his OK for Matteo to discuss it.
It’s obvious the breakup isn’t fresh, because Matteo also disclosed that after ending it with Rodrigo he went on to date gorgeous Italian model Gianluca Volgare. One way to get over a man, is another man!
In September 2025, the pair posted a photo sharing a peck on the cheek and set off a new round of rumors.
From lovers to friends
However, they too have since ended their romantic relationship.
“I also dated a really great guy name Gianluca, who you got to meet, and I’ve talked about on the pod and stuff and he’s just an amazing person,” he said to co-host Nick Smith.
“So it was a a difficult time to navigate [with Rodrigo] and it was difficult to even navigate that with Gianluca, you know to be like, ‘I don’t know how to speak about this etc.’”
While known for his impeccable sense of humor, Matteo’s vulnerability in speaking on such personal matters really comes through with authenticity and heart.
Despite the complexities that come with breakups, Matteo has managed to maintain healthy friendships with both his exes.
“But we’re through to the other side, and I’m happy to say that, you know, they’re two friends of mine,” he said, before sharing why he spoke on his personal relationships at this time. “I just kind of wanted to be open about that and I’m feeling really exposed.”
Broadway bound
While navigating through his rough patch in relationships, Matteo is on a career upswing taking a short sabbatical from comedy touring to make his Broadway debut in the Tony-winning revival of Chicago.
On Monday, he hit the stage of the Ambassador Theatre showing off his muscial theater chops stepping into the role of slick lawyer Billy Flynn.
Matteo will takeover the role through July 19th, when Mark Ballas will return as Flynn.
