Dr. Lee Phillips is a successful psychotherapist who helps people navigate some of the thorniest issues in their sex and personal lives. But no amount of clinical training could’ve prepared him for the herculean task of leaving the Equinox locker room unscathed.
In a now-viral video, Phillips recently opened up about his last day at the luxury gym. The NYC resident says he realized he doesn’t need to pay $300 per month to “feel inadequate” about himself. He can just scroll Instagram for free at home!
Unshackled from expensive monthly dues, Phillips was determined to leave Equinox with his dignity intact. But the bougie brand’s clientele had other ideas. After finishing his final workout, Phillips headed towards the men’s locker room, or as he describes it, “a gay safari.”
At his location in Manhattan, he frequently sees CEOs and influencers in various stages of undress, as well as unclothed men “blow-drying body parts that should never experience forced air.”

Looking for a quick exit, Phillips encountered a guy taking up an entire counter with all of his personal accoutrements: toothbrush, water bottle, protein shake, moisturizer, another moisturizer, serum and cream. “At one point, I thought he was opening a Sephora,” Phillips remarked.
When Phillips asked if he could squeeze in–the man was spread out across three sinks–he demurred. “I’m almost done,” the man replied.

How often does salacious activity occur in the steam room?
At that point, Phillips had multiple options. Notorious for a scintillating steam room scene, Equinox is rife with gay lore. Earlier this spring, the Daily Mail covered what “REALLY” happens in the gym’s locker rooms. The verdict, based off a smattering of interviews?
Lots of flirting and side-eyeing, and sometimes a quickie. Last holiday season, we covered the travails of a hunky TikToker who was experiencing the former and thought the latter was coming–only to be spurned by a couple of devious daddies.
Online, current and ex-Equinox employees often share stories about the salacious shenanigans they’ve witnessed…
“When I worked there they would have to check the steam room hourly to make sure dudes weren’t banging in there,” posted a former Equinox worker.
On the Equinox subreddit, there is at least one long thread on “inappropriate behavior” in the men’s steam room. A 2018 lawsuit claimed that one location in Manhattan allowed its members to openly engage in group play.
A group of janitors have also once filed a complaint, dubbing the brand “equi-naughty.”
As for Phillips, some nudging or grabbing wasn’t an option. The man taking up the entire counter wouldn’t budge.
“Some people take care of themselves,” he chided.
To which Phillips replied, “I forgot the workout doesn’t include a discount unless you finish with a beautiful facial.”
While that’s a strong comeback, in the end, nobody is receiving a discount at Equinox, facial finish or not!
