If you’re seeing more skin than usual at the beach, pool, or local watering hole on Sunday, it’s because every July 5 is National Bikini Day.
Also, more and more men are shimmying into skimpy swimwear, as The New York Times and Slate have reported in the past year. Those think pieces focused more on swimsuits of Speedo length, but you know bikinis won’t be far behind in mainstream media coverage.
Of course, there are some board-short fans who just aren’t on “board” with seeing other guys’ thighs, apparently.
“Can we talk about bikini swimsuits?” one Reddit user posted in r/askgaybros recently. “Please stop wearing them. We are not in Europe, and what’s wrong with shorts/trunks anyway?”

So many men, so many teeny-tiny swimsuits!
As you might expect—and hope—other Reddit users shut that criticism down. “What exactly triggers you about what others are wearing?” one commenter wrote.
“I’ll wear whatever the f*ck I want since I believe in freedom. Thanks byeeee,” said another.
A third user chimed in to say, “If you don’t like them, don’t wear them. Is that too difficult for you, or what? Also tell me you’re uneducated without telling me you’re uneducated, because there’s more than just [the] U.S.A. to the world.”
And everyone is welcome to the bikini party, not just people with so-called “beach bodies.”
“To tell you the truth, I think overweight men like me look much better in a ‘bikini’ … than a baggy board short or big boxer-type swimsuit,” a Reddit user wrote in another thread. “Can’t easily explain why; I just think it’s a better look.”
(By the way, every body is a “beach body” in our books.)
And if you need some inspo, check out Instagram posts that have been tagged or captioned with some of our favorite phrases—“male bikini,” “gay bikini,” or “bikini gay,” or similar permutations—or just show folks getting their Vitamin D in tight-fitting, leg-baring swimsuits.
We’re just sorry we haven’t seen one “itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polkadot bikini.”
