Thanks to a law  passed by Congress in 1990, July 19 is Flight Attendant Safety Professionals’ Day. But we hardly need a reason to salute those making the skies a little friendlier and more fabulous!

Though straight male flight attendants obviously exist—it was a heterosexual truck driver and father who  got Pan Am to start hiring male stewards, after all—being a flight attendant has long offered queer men the freedom to move about the world as themselves.

“The aisles and galleys of airplanes, as well as crew hotels and crash pads, served the same role that other gays and lesbians found in bars: a place where they could meet others like themselves and even embrace their same-sex desires for the first time,” Phil Tiemeyer wrote in the book Plane Queer: Labor, Sexuality, and AIDS in the History of Male Flight Attendants, per Slate.

Meanwhile, a veteran Lufthansa and Condor employee told Slate in  a 2018 article that an airline is the “sexiest work environment there is.” (He also recalled having a steamy encounter with a chief steward in a Boeing 757 lavatory, plus another with two British Airways flight attendants on a beach.)

On social media, gay flight attendants are keeping their posts chaste—even when they strip off their uniforms—but they show off their colors with hashtags like #gay and #flightattendant or some combination thereof. (One of these users even used the hashtag #queerty!)
